Do Games Really Increase Your Intelligence?

Most people regard gaming as something to pass the time or just fun, but there really is evidence to prove that playing games can make you smarter, better at making decisions and even increase your IQ.
- Creative thinking:
Commonly known as 'thinking outside the box'. All kinds of games create a scenario where plays are required to think creatively in order to achieve a goal or medal in the game. With practise, the gamer can then apply these skills in real life scenarios.
- Multitasking:
Switching between tasks can be a challenging concept for most people, because as humans we tend to focus on one aspect more than another, therefore neglecting other important tasks. Gaming improves your multitasking abilities and keeps the mind awake and responsive to several pieces of information at once. Bring this to reality and it can become a very useful ability.
- Reaction times:
This may be the most obvious effect which gaming has on the mind, and there's a reason for that. Most games contain time limits and require the gamer to achieve the highest award in the shortest amount of time. This forces the gamer to react to changes as quickly as possible and requires all of the gamers' attention for a high score to be achieved. Repetitively playing games which call for fast reaction times can dramatically increase a persons' reaction times in general.
- Memory improvement:
Games require a certain level of memory to complete a task - although this is mainly short-term memory, it can easily be improved under gaming scenarios. Gamers are required to remember patterns, numbers and techniques when playing certain games and the mind's ability to absorb this information will increase over time.
Although too much gaming will prove to be unhealthy, studies show that in reasonable quantities gaming can be extremely beneficial especially to children who naturally desire to learn more and improve their mental capacities. At young ages, our minds have the ability to absorb large quantities of information in order to feed their learning curve. Many people lack creativity in everyday life and a major cause of this may be due to a lack of gaming or productivity in early stages of their lives. Gaming not only assists children in learning and improving their mental skills, but can dramatically help adults in reaction times, short term memory abilities and creativity also. Possessing these abilities can give people major advantages in life.
